PEPCO DC's Rate to compare can be found right on their website at http://www.pepco.com/home/choice/dc/compare/

However, this actually only shows a 12 month average of 9.64 while the true rate to compare can be found at the DC PSC at

They give us the true rate to compare as 9.70¢

With PEPCO DC's rate to compare at 9.7¢ almost any alternative supplier will save you money.  But which one has the best fixed rate?  (I did not include any variable rates in this post._

The 3 Best Electricity Rates in PEPCO DC are ...

• Horizon Power and Light 8.3¢ / kwh (14 months)
• Constellation at 8.49¢ / kwh (24 month fixed rate with a $50 Visa Card, but with $150 Cancellation Fee)
• Stream Energy at 8.88¢ / kwh (24 Month Fixed rate)

At first glance it looks like Horizon Power and Light has the lowest rate, however Constellation has only a slightly lower rate but comes with a $50 Visa Gift Card. So is that $50 Visa Gift card enough to make up for the slightly higher rate?  Lets do some math.

According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration the average DC Household uses 721 kwh/ month.  Using that average, your supply charge with Horizon Power and Light would be $59.84 and with Constellation, your supply charge would be $61.21.  That's a whooping difference of $1.37, every penny counts right?!  Doing some simple math, it would take over 3 Years to make up for that $50 Visa Gift Card . Chats longer then the term!  In my opinion the offer form constellation is worth is, but it does come with a $150 Cancellation Fee.  

So the choice is really up to you.  That's why its called customer choice and that's why we can compare electric rates in DC PEPCO

I have found Potomac Edison f/k/a Allegheny Power to be one of the most difficult utilities to understand.  It seems like no knows how to figure out their bill including Potomac Edison themselves.  Let me explain.   The price to compare in Potomac Edison is comprised of 3 charges; Electric Supply Charge, Transmission Charge and the Energy Cost Adjustment.

To find these charges you'll have to search deep withing Potomac Edison's 183 page long Retail Tariff "Book" which you can take a look at here.

Here you can plainly see:
TRANSMISSION CHARGE  
 Energy Charge 
 All kilowatt-hours................................................................................ $0.00396 per kilowatt-hour 
 ELECTRIC SUPPLY CHARGE 
 All kilowatt-hours................................................................................ $0.05241 per kilowatt-hour

Ok so lets add those up.  It looks like the current rate to compare would be 5.637¢  Right?  In fact that's what Potomac Edison SAYS is the rate to compare as seen in this link here.

And they even say that includes the energy cost adjustment. 

But wait... 
We never added that in.

After doing a little more digging I came across this.

This is the Energy Cost Adjustment rate schedule.  And apparently there is an additional $0.00393 charge.  

So the actual rate to compare is 6.03¢

I'm sure this wasn't an intentional mistake, as the way the rate is determined is a bit complicated.  All that being said don't be mislead and know that the true rate to compare is  6.03¢

So any ways lets see which competitive supply company has the best rates in Maryland: Potomac Edison 

The 3 Best Electricity Rates in Maryland: Potomac Edison are ...

• First Energy Solutions at 5.89¢ / kwh (12 month rate with a $100 Cancellation Fee)
• Washington Gas Energy Services at 5.99¢ / kwh (12 month fixed rate, $150 Cancellation Fee)
• Direct Energy  at 6.19¢ / kwh (12 Month Fixed rate, No Cancellation Fee)

At first glance it looks like First Energy Solutions is the most obvious choice, since it is the lowest. But is the lowest always the best choice?  Maybe.  Maybe not. After looking at several other utilities who have filled for their summer rates,  you'll be shocked to find that the rates are going down this summer.  Since I have been in this industry, rates have always gone up in the summer.  That being said natural gas prices are starting to climb up too.

And with increased natural gas prices, increased electric rates aren't far behind.  So its really hard to well the prices are going to be set at in the summer time.  Potomac Edison is scheduled to set their pricing in January 2014.  Honestly with January coming up so close it would make sense for most consumers to wait and see what the new rates are going to be, before locking into a year long deal with a cancellation fee.  Hope this helps.

With Delmarva currently at 9.06¢ almost any alternative supplier will save you money.  But which one has the best fixed rate?

• NRG Residential Solutions at 7.00¢ / kwh (variable rate with a 3 month cap)
• Con Edison Solutions  at 7.99¢ / kwh (24 month fixed rate, No Cancellation Fee)
• Next Era Energy  at 8.30¢ / kwh (12 Month Fixed rate with a $25/month cancellation fee)

At first glance it looks like NRG Residential Solutions has the lowest rate, however after further inspection  NRG has a variable rate.  This means there is no price protection after the introductory rate.  Con Edison offers a low fixed rate with no cancellation fee.  Without needing to do any hard math, it is clear that Con Edison has the Best Electricity Rate in Maryland: Delmarva as of November 2013.

Also I really appreciate Con Edison for offering such a low rate for 2 years with absolutely no cancellation fee.  In this volatile energy market its hard to predict whats going to happen.   Having the luxury of locking in such a low fixed rate without a cancellation fee is great because it allows us to switch suppliers in the future if rates drop significantly.  Great job Con Edison for allowing customers to get great rates with the flexibility of canceling without penalty.  This is truly what consumers are looking for

Although deregulation of the electric industry in Maryland was signed into law in April 1999, the SMECO utility has had very little if any marketing activity going on.  Most supply companies don't even offer service in that area.   In fact the Public Service Commission's website doesn't even include it in their monthly enrollment report. The Office of People Council, as of November 2013, shows no supply offers being made.  All that being said is there any way to lower your electric rate in the SMECO utility?   Thankfully, yes there is.

I have been fortunate enough to be in the deregulated electric industry for roughly four years now.  I have worked with several companies and have access to exclusive deals and rates that are not generally open to the public.  There is a company serving the SMECO service area, but for whatever reason this company is not advertising that they serve there. However, when you call them to enroll, they will enroll you.  Whatever the reason why this company is not advertising there, I'm sure its pretty safe to assume that they wouldn't want me to put them on blast and let everyone reading this blog know about it.

However, I can provide you with some specific details about the product they have and leave you with a contact form if you do wish to enroll with them.

Currently SMECO's rate is 9.67 cents/kwh according the the Office of Peoples Council.  The alternative supply company has a fixed rate of 8.25 cents/ kwh.  That is a over 14% savings.  The U.S. Energy Information estimates that the average Maryland household uses 1005 kwh monthly.  Using that average we can estimate about a $171 savings over the course of a year. Not bad.

Taking advantage of electric choice is perfectly safe.  Nothing needs to be installed and SMECO isn't going to be mad at you.  In fact you'll still be a SMECO customer, SMECO is simply going to be delivering your electric supply from a different source and at a cheaper rate.  Here is a excerpt taken from SMECO's website.

You won’t even notice a difference in your electric service. Your local utility continues to deliver your power. The transmission of electricity over long distances and the distribution of power to your home or business are regulated by the Maryland Public Service Commission (PSC) to will ensure that the reliability of your service will not be affected.

Though you may choose another power supplier, the lines and equipment serving your home or business do not change. Your local utility maintains this equipment and responds to your call for service.

SMECO will still delivery your electricity.  Your simply telling them where to get the electricity from and you get it at a lower rate.  Also they have competitive custom rates for business owners and property managers as well.

So since choosing a supply company is perfectly safe and saves you money why wouldn't you make the switch?

While it's pretty safe to assume that Direct Energy is the worst of the 3, with a highest rate,  is ConEdison Solutions really a better deal then North American Power?  ConEdison Solutions does have a lower rate by a third of a penny but North American Power has a $50 Welcome Bonus.  Lets do some quick math.
